Cambodia Seeks to Enhance Immigration Management and Crime Prevention with Australian Expertise

Phnom Penh, June 13, 2024: A delegation from Cambodia, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha, is currently in Australia to learn from and enhance cooperation in immigration management, crime prevention, and security technologies.

During a meeting on June 12 at the Australian Parliament building, Sar Sokha met with Andrew Giles, Australia's Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs. The Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister expressed a keen interest in understanding Australia’s innovative approaches to immigration, technology integration in crime prevention, combating human trafficking, and overall security enhancements.

The purpose of the week-long visit, which concludes on June 16, is to adopt successful practices and strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas that could support sub-national administrative reform in Cambodia.

Sar Sokha highlighted Cambodia's current efforts to update and refine relevant legal frameworks to better manage immigration and security operations, with a particular focus on online crime prevention. He also sought Australian expertise in training Cambodian law enforcement officials.

Minister Andrew Giles acknowledged the progress made by Cambodia in these sectors and agreed to assist in enhancing the capabilities of Cambodian authorities through training and cooperative initiatives.

This visit marks the third international mission led by Sar Sokha, following engagements in Vietnam and a combined visit to Switzerland and Germany, aimed at broadening Cambodia’s international cooperation on public safety and administrative reforms.
